Mobile devices come with manufacture’s standard and default security settings but it is your job to edit them to suit the security requirements for your own case where possible.
One of the post COVID 19 effects on the work environment is the surge in remote work practices. This could be working from home or hybrid scenario where workers are meant to bring their own devices (BYOD) to use at offsite locations within and outside working hours.
With this scenario comes some security risks as people will not be utilizing the requisite security standard implemented in their physical offices. These security concerns among others can be reduced by implementing some of the following security measures on our mobile devices.
- Enable user authentication. This helps to verify that those requesting to use the company application or resources remotely are registered to do so for the company on their mobile devices remotely.
- Use a password manager. Using password manager will help users to create different strong passwords for their different accounts without bordering to remember each password.
- Always run updates. Updates are very necessary for every computing devices especially the mobile ones. Every now and then new vulnerabilities and bugs are identified in applications, and these need to be fixed through software patches and updates to avoid exploitation.
- Avoid public wi-fi. Many public internet access are generally provided at no cost. Public / free wifi access are mainly unsecured networks that is accessible by different classes of users and as such it poses security threat of either pilfering of your personal information or infection of your computing devices.
- Enable remote lock and wipe As remote working is currently on the increase, Organizations that operate BYOD (Bring your own device) policy and allow employees access to their vital data should consider enabling remote lock and data wipe on those devices so as to protect their data whenever there is loss or misuse of those employees devices.
- Cloud backups. This is very necessary. Routine backups especially to the cloud helps you to recover faster from an incident that affects your device data and information.
