Multi-Factor Authentication

MFA, commonly known as Multi-Factor Authentication is an enormous boost to online security. It is mainly deployed as (2FA) 2-factor authentication or (3FA) 3-factor authentication models.

An evident common tactic cybercriminals use is to send a phishing email and then direct you to a fake login web page to “capture” your username/password. Once they get your account details, they can then access documents or other information.

If they eventually gain access to your email account, they could scam your friends, family, or business associates on your behalf. They can even use your email address to reset your other accounts! That is how dangerous it can be.

If you go to a website and click “Forgot password” where does that password reset go to? It is strongly advised that you have some form of MFA on every email account as well as accounts that need a higher level of security.

MFA categories includes

1. Something you know (e.g. Usernames, Passwords, and PINs).

2. Something you are (e.g. Fingerprints, Voice recognition and Retina Scan).

3. Something you have (e.g. SmartCards, OTP tokens, SMS codes)

2FA for example requires that you provide at least 2 authentication elements selected from two different categories of Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) model to verify your identity.

Depending on the MFA model being offered by your online or offline login-in platform, you will be rest assured that it will be difficult to impersonate you since you are not relying on only one aspect of authentication category.
