Some of tips to observe while using emails include but not limited to the following:
- Always double-check exactly who you are corresponding with.
- Use ‘BCC’ (Blind Carbon Copy) when sending emails to large groups or mailing lists.
- Do not open emails from someone you do not know or trust. Protect your email account from malware and phishing codes.
- Avoid sending any sensitive information over email, if possible, password-protect and encrypt them before sending. And send the password to the recipient by means other than email.
- Never open an attachment within an email from a company or person you don’t know (or that you were not expecting)
- Never reply to or click on links inside spam emails.
- Verify by calling the person you know if his or her email is used to send you unsolicited message. It may be that the account has been compromised by a miscreant.
- Activate your spam filter. Put a recovery phone number and or another email on your account.
- If you want to see the real email address of the person sending you masqueraded email, place your mouse cursor over the sender’s email address WITHOUT clicking and the real email will show.
- Use multiple, memorable and strong passwords for your different online accounts so that when you succumb to Social Engineering / phishing attack on one account, the details will not be used to hijack other related accounts of yours – never use the same password for all your accounts, change your passwords as soon as you can.
