Watch your typing or what you are clicking!

Have you ever typed a website address a little too fast – like gooogle.com instead of google.com? or amaazon.com instead of amazon.com? These small mistakes could lead you to a dangerous or fake website. This trick is called typo squatting.

Typo-squatting is when malicious actors register web addresses that are misspelled versions of popular websites. These dubious sites may look real, but they can contain links that steal your personal information, infect your device with malware, or trick you into giving away login details.

Watch your typing to protect yourself.

You should always

• Double-check URLs (Universal Resource Locator), look closely for spelling errors before clicking.
• Use bookmarks for your favorite sites to avoid typing errors.
• Be cautious with links in emails, texts, or social media. Even one wrong letter can be dangerous. Its better to hover mouse over them to see the actual address.
• Look for https security (the padlock icon) in your browser—it is a good sign, but not a guarantee of safety.

Typosquatting relies on simple human mistakes. Staying alert and taking a second to review your typing can protect you from falling into a cyber-trap.
